According to a recent study, female children are hard-pressed to find a diversity of roles for women on television. Consciously Beautiful TV will provide viewers with an opportunity to see themselves and the world differently by providing a voice for women that is often not heard in mainstream media.
Studies reveal that teenagers (60 percent) spend on average 20 hours per week in front of television and computer screens, a third spend closer to 40 hours per week, and about 7 percent are exposed to more than 50 hours of ‘screen-time’ per week, according to a study presented at the American Heart Association’s 48th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention.
Through research, we found the following startling statistics from Michelle May, M.D., Creator of Amihungry.com
- There has been at least a 60 percent increase over the last 25 years in how women are portrayed. Now, over half of women in media are portrayed sexually or as objects of beauty rather than as real people.
- Only five percent of women in the U.S. actually fit the current body type popularly portrayed in advertising today.
- One study found that sixty-nine percent of girls felt that magazine models had a major influence on their concept of what a perfect body shape should look like.
Consciously Beautiful TV is determined to challenge the images and portrayals of women by offering an array of women and girls in a truthful and positive way through media.
